John has arrived back on American soil as of 2 May 2008.
After a safety briefing they reunited at the Freedom Hall terminal . (Awaiting John was a battle buddy who's in the fire service with him and a Deputy Chief from a local FD that John befriended while stationed down SOUTH before deploying). All Soldiers got a 48 hour pass and will start reintegration training and debriefing on Monday. In the mean time John spent his first day back home wearing civilian clothes, fished with his buddy on Saturday and even squeezed in a medical call and John was happy to report he got to work up the patient and do the transport in the back of the bus....(Some things never change). I will keep everyone posted. John expects to be granted a 30 day block leave sometime around Memorial Day or so & said to say HOWDY to everyone.

200 troops arrive home
Next contingent to arrive at Lawson Field on Wednesday
Soldiers are silhouetted as they disembark the aircraft Friday afternoon at Lawson Army Airfield after returning from Iraq.
As more than 200 soldiers from the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team exited a chartered World Air plane, another group of soldiers were climbing aboard a similar chartered aircraft, one that will carry them to the war in Iraq. On a normal Friday night, soldiers from the CONUS (Continental U.S.) Replacement Center leave Lawson Army Airfield for overseas as their families and friends said goodbye from the Freedom Hall terminal area. On this particular Friday, however, the CRC group moved its farewell party to a nearby gymnasium to make way for the hundreds of spouses, children and parents on hand to greet the returning brigade group. Fresh back from 15 months in the desert of Iraq, representatives from each of the brigade's six battalions were among those aboard the flight that originated in Kuwait with a stopover in Germany. "He's going to want a hot bath and a dinner of mom's gumbo," said 19-year-old Toni Williams, who was waiting at Freedom Hall, the airport's spacious terminal, for her dad, 1st Sgt. Tony Williams of Headquarters and Headquarters Company. The soldiers arrived on schedule, but they had to clear customs as soon as they disembarked, then begin an in-processing program that was scheduled to last almost two hours. So it was late in the evening before families and soldiers could be reunited. "That's OK," said Toni Williams, who was holding her 5-month-old son, Tony. "We've waited 15 months; another hour or so won't hurt." Carlos Rodriguez of Apollo Beach, Fla., was on hand to meet his son, Ruben, a specialist with the 203rd Brigade Support Battalion. "We'll be able to spend a weekend with him," Carlos said. "First stop will definitely be either a Burger King or a McDonald's. That's what he's really missed over there." Col. Gilberto Perez, commandant of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, greeted the troops as they climbed off their plane, all carrying their weapons. Women from the brigade's Family Readiness Group were selling T-shirts, with the logos of the brigade and its battalions. Asking price: $15. "All that money's going to build a monument to honor the soldiers that we lost on this deployment," said the Family Readiness Group's Evelyn Livermore. She also reminded the public at large that the shirts can be purchased via e-mail at friendsofthesledgeham mers@hotmail.com. The group also prepared baked goods for all the arriving soldiers and their families. The next contingent of 3rd Brigade soldiers is due to arrive at Lawson Field on Wednesday night. The entire brigade, commanded by Col. Wayne W. Grigsby Jr., should be home by month's end. All of those arriving Friday were given 48-hour passes but they must return to post Monday to begin reintegration training. After 10 half-days of training, each soldier will be granted 30 days of leave.
Cattey Update Feb 1 2008: 2 February 2008. A quick greetings from Fort Cattey. John called from Iraq this morning. He is still at Patrol Base Assassin just East of baghdad still which is at the "4 corners market place" SSE of the capitol city.
JOHN RECEIVED A FIELD PROMOTION today and is now E4- SPECIALIST !!! JOhn said to say Happy Birthday to Uncle Mike and thankx ALL who sent a CARE box, cookies or even a letter from back home. (These are always welcomed mail that maintains moral and makes the months go by easier). John reports area improving although still dangerous with some "missions" coming up. Only months to go in this deployment. God Bless to everyone back home and "Yall" down South from SPL Cattey, Johnathon.
Best regards, Papa Cattey
Update on John Cattey Jan 26 2008; John and his platoon have been out continuing night patrols. This is week 45 of the deployment. John Says it remains cold with 40 degrees temps at night. Region is safer but still an occasional "test" or IED attack. Rain and muddy season if ya can call it that. John did a "DEE DEE DEE" move three nights ago while turning around the MRAP he got stuck and 2 B pulled out by the 2 HumVee's. Almost went over (MRAP is Mine Resistant Ambush Protectant, the LARGE trucks that are finally starting to arrive that have the deep "V" bottom to deflect a blast.) 3-1 Cav did have a Soldier KIA last week in a deep buried IED blast but not where John is.
John sends his love back home 2 everyone. He got the box from Mike & Tiff, along with the Barn Fire Pics which he was PISSEd he missed.
That's all 4 now, God Bless,
Regards, Papa Cattey

Update on John Cattey Jan 11 2008; 11 January 2008. 07:45 hours EST. Got a welcomed call home from John, who was at the PB after a night thru day mission. He was getting ready for a nap as others were returning to the FOB to refit and some rest. JOHN reports "Hell froze over" in his words. Told me while out last night, it SNOWED in Iraq. No accumulation but he was pissed cause the heater in their NEW MRAP will not throw any heat. (MRAP is Mine Resistant Ambush Protected the new "V" bottom up armored trucks U see on the news that they just put in service). John was going to have a bite, clean up and read to "owners manual" to see if they can figure out how to engage the heater diesel. He said to tell family & friends Happy New Year and thanks to ALL who sent CARE boxes and TFD for the plethora of COOKIES.
Plus a hearty thanks to Bob McIntyre for the recondition of his melted light. He hopes to meet you next fall & thank you in person
That's all for now, Papa Cattey signing off. & remember despite what anyone feels about war, FREEDOM is NOT FREE.
God Bless
Update on John Cattey Dec 22nd 2007: 22 December 2007. Greetings from Papa Cattey. I just wanted to send a quick thank you note letting ALL know that I received a call from JOHN from Patrol Base Assassin just East of Baghdad today. John related that he had received (3) THREE large boxes from #111 Water St. yesterday FULL of cookies and "well wishes" from back home. He thanked EVERYONE for there contributions and is sharing the holiday cheer amongst his battle buddies as, they just got back from a mission. ALL were very pleased with the GIFT from TFD & Home town cooking :-) John reports despite what the liberal news media reports, that their zone and "the surge" IS working and the area has stabilized. BUT still is dangerous. John thanked everyone for their continued support and sends his Christmas Greetings back home. The Soldiers of the 3rd ID, Rock of Marne say thank you again for your support. It is sometimes the little things that pass the time and CARE boxes are always appreciated and very much welcomed in the war zone. Bless You ALL Merry Christmas and a very Happy New year to all back home in the USA from John Cattey !
PS When John called he said it was COLD, he was decompressing from a mission and ready to take a shower & go to bed.... John Thanked TFD for the watch cap, which he was wearing at the time of his call. Best regards Mark Cattey
