Press Release
The regions of Connecticut contain a diverse range of opportunities and skills. In Hartford just 44% of 10th graders achieved the state goal in reading on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test while in Litchfield 96% of 10th graders achieved the state goal. This is a trend which sets the Hartford kids up for limited future opportunities. In Hartford, 61% of low-income families have no books in their homes. How many good books do you have in your home? The most effective way of combating illiteracy is to get books into the homes of children.
Bantam Boy Scout Troop 29, as part of Sean Corning’s Eagle Scout Project, will be running a book drive of new and gently used books to be distributed to kids from birth through grade 12. The collected books will be donated to the Greater Hartford Literacy Council. This is an organization that distributes books to needy people and organizations in the Greater Hartford area.

Books will be collected until April 7th. Please, check your home for gently used children’s books, or visit a bookstore and help us to show kids what a pleasure reading can be.
There are collection points at many locations around Litchfield, including Murphy’s Pharmacy, The Music Shop, The Litchfield Public Schools, the Town Hall, The Community Center and the following Churches: St. Anthony’s, St. Michael’s and St. Paul’s.
