(January 3, 2006) LITCHFIELD, CT – St. Michael’s Parish donated $500 to the Litchfield Fire Department for their building fundraiser at the firehouse meeting on January 2nd. The contribution was in response to an essay written by Drew Lanthier, grade 9, one of the winners in St. Michael’s Community Giving Contest. Litchfield students were offered an opportunity to choose any organization they deemed worthy of St. Michael’s support. Drew, a lieutenant of the Junior Corps for the Litchfield Volunteer Fire Company, wrote about the pressing need for expansion of the Litchfield firehouse. As the town’s population has grown, so has the requirement for fire protection services. Additional volunteers, and younger members, have joined the force to meet this need. However, there is insufficient space for their fire gear and no area where members can bunk during emergencies. Drew noted that during the heavy rains this past October, he reported for duty at 6pm the first day of the storm and didn’t return until 5:30am the following day. He and other volunteer firefighters responded to more than 30 calls for assistance during that period. If the firehouse was equipped with sleeping facilities, the exhausted crew could have rested at intermittent shifts. The firehouse also would be well served with an exercise room, Drew said. Firefighting duties are very physically demanding and many of the younger volunteers are currently paying for their own gym fees in order to stay in shape.
